I know it has been a while

I know I haven't updated this blog in forever, but life got in the way. I plan on updating again in the new year, though maybe not as often as I find I do not have as much time as I once did. We are traveling to London soon so watch for some posts about the hopefully amazing food we eat while we are there!

Tien Hiang, Paris France

Location: 14 Rue Bichat, 75010 Paris, France

One of my favorite restaurants in Paris is Tien Hiang. Everything we have had here has been amazing and what I still have to find in Berlin. Their mock meats are my favorites and it is just really good. So when we went back to Paris for a few days the first place we visited was Tien Hiang. Really we had wanted to go back at least once more on that trip, but we unable to fit it in. We started this visit with the fried dumplings. I love dumplings and these were tasty. The sauce that came with them was odd. Sweet and kind of like a barbecue sauce which was interesting and not expected.

We also tried the radish cake. This was also good, but greasy. It had a light flavor, but I enjoyed it.

Our first main was the caramelized chicken clay pot which was so unbelievably good! I could have eaten a heaping plate full of this stuff. It was mock chicken, shallots, coconut milk, ginger and tofu. There were large pieces of ginger and the mock chicken was my favorite kind, though I don't know what it is exactly. It was so good. I wish I had some now...

We also tried the Vermicelli with lemongrass beef - lemongrass, onion, tofu, soya pieces, peanuts, cucumber and mint. This was also very tasty. Fresh and light, but hard to top the caramelized chicken. Still very good.

Overall - I love Tien Hiang. Definitely try and stop by if you are in Paris.

Yumcha Heroes, Berlin Germany

Location: Weinbergsweg 8, 10119 Berlin, Germany

Our second visit to Yumcha Heroes started off the same as the first - with Pak Choi. It is so tasty and light and just a great dish. The baked ginger goes nicely with the pak choi.

Then we also both got some dumplings, though I got the dumpling soup since we were sitting outside and it was getting a bit chilly. That and I love soup and this one is delicious. It comes with the same dumplings that you get steamed, just with broth added. So tasty.

Then we decided to try something new, the silk tofu cube - silk tofu baked with vegetables and a soy ginger sauce. This was just alright. I am not sure I would get it again as it is more expensive, but not that much food and not amazing. I mean it was good, just not great. I would just stick with my small dishes and be done with it.

Overall - Yumcha Heroes is great for light delicious foods.

Makoto, Berlin Germany

While my in-laws were in town we needed to find some places for meat and veggie eaters (we usually eat at veggie places). After reading a good review we decided to check out Makoto for dinner one night. We started off with the miso tofu - tofu with miso sauce. This was really good, light miso flavor and was just a nice light starter.

We also tried the vegetable croquettes - mashed potatoes, peas, corn and onions fried (comes with mayo so you have to ask to leave that off. They didn't understand me the first time and they came out covered in it so they fixed it for us). These were alright. Just mashed potato cakes. Good but not amazing.

We then tried the Yasai Don - fried vegetables and tofu with ginger sauce served over rice. This was quite tasty, very nice light ginger flavor. Not too overpowering like ginger can sometimes be. Very good.

Overall - We will definitely be back to Makoto. The food was tasty and fresh.

Tanne B, Berlin Germany

Location: Eisenbahnstraße 48, 10997 Berlin, Germany

Tanne B is one of our favorite ice cream places. We stopped by a little while ago and it was chilly outside and they had a red lentil coconut soup listed as vegan so we thought we would try that (as well as our usual waffle and ice cream). The soup was delicious. It had pieces of carrots and sprouts, lentils and was creamy but light. So tasty with a light heat to it. Perfect for a chilly day lunch.

Overall - We love Tanne B, and now we will be back to try more of their soups!

Hot Dog Soup, Berlin Germany

We were walking by Hot Dog Soup one day and their sign outside stating they had vegan options so we stopped in to check it out. We started with the Hawaiian - veggie dog with pineapple, fried onion, ketchup and sweet chili sauce. This was really delicious. It was sweet and really tasty.

The other hot dog we tried was the Kraut - veggie dog with fried onions, sauerkraut, ketchup and mustard. This was good, but I am not a huge mustard fan and there was a bit much on this for me. It kind of overpowered everything for me and since I don't like mustard it kind of made it just okay. If you like mustard though it is really good.

Overall - If we are in the area and need something to eat we would stop in again. The hot dogs were tasty and service was super quick.

Cake Prinzessin, Berlin Germany

We were wandering through the Mauer Park Flea Market one Sunday and saw a sign for Cake Prinzessin with vegan cupcakes so we of course had to stop and try one. They had a few flavors but the choco-chai called to me. The icing was actually really tasty, and usually I am not a huge icing fan (usually it is too sweet). The cake however was really dry and just not very good. Disappointing.

Overall - The cupcake was not very good. The cake was dry and just not tasty, though the frosting was delicious.

Sfitzy Veg, Berlin Germany

I know I have posted about Sfizy Veg before, but it really is one of my top two places to eat in Berlin. So tasty. Some of the best pizza I have ever had. Everything we have ever tried here has been amazing. I know it can take a while to get your food if it is busy, but it is always worth the wait. Every time we go we have to keep trying new things until we have gone through the menu. This is what we told ourselves or else we would keep getting the same thing and never find new favorites! On this trip we tried the chorizo pizza. I was expecting more of a chorizo crumble, but the slices were tasty.

We also tried the spinach ricotta pizza. This is a new favorite as it was so light but delicious. The ricotta was light and spinach went well with it. The crust as always was delicious.

Overall - Definitely stop by Sfitzy Veg if you are in Berlin. It is one of two restaurants I would definitely eat at if I only had a short time here.

Vego Foodworld, Berlin Germany

We probably eat at Vego Foodworld way too often. I almost always get a burger because every one I have tried has been amazing. On this visit I had one of my favorites - the bacon cheeseburger. Bacon, cheese, tomato, lettuce, pickles and sauces. So good.

Raymond will sometimes get non-burger items. This visit he went with the currywurst, which is not my favorite. I just...not sure I like this ketchup/curry combo. Sometimes it is good, but this one is just not for me. Raymond really likes it though and he gets it once and a while.

Overall - We love Vego. We eat there way too often. If you are looking for greasy burgers and fry type place this is for you.

Viasko, Berlin Germany

For our anniversary this year we decided to go to Viasko for dinner. We had eaten here years ago when we were just visiting, but had not made it back since we moved to Berlin. We started with the Wonton lasagna with avocado and beetroot mousse with caramelized tofu red cabbage salad. This was so amazing. The avocado mousse could overpower the whole dish, but the beetroot mousse was amazing. Really I never had anything like this, the crispy wonton, the velvety mousses, the smokey salad all came together into an amazing bite of food. So good and probably my favorite thing we are there.

We also tried the cheese spatzel. We had this dish in Munich and loved it so I was hoping for a similar dish. This one was very different, it reminded of us breakfast foods. It came with a salad and onion rings and had smoked tofu in it, which I think helped make us think of bacon and eggs. It was really tasty, but not as cheesy as I expected. Still really good and I would go back for more.

The last dish we tried was the seitan ragout with homemade dumplings and green beans. The dumplings were really tasty, with herbed breadcrumbs. The green beans were cooked well and were quite good. The seitan ragout was tasty, but a little overwhelming with the flavors. This was our least favorite dish we tried, but we still enjoyed it. We were going to get some dessert, but these three dishes were so much food we couldn't fit any in our stomachs.

Overall - I really liked Viasko. Everything we had was good and I would definitely go back. They have brunch on the weekend, which we really need to try out. They also change their menu often so we will be back to try some more dishes.

The Bishops Arms, Kiruna Sweden

Location: Föreningsgatan 6C, 981 31 Kiruna, Sweden

While in Kiruna we stayed at The Bishops Arms, which is also a cozy bar and restaurant. We decided to eat dinner there one night with some drinks since they had a few veggie options which could be made vegan. We tried the veggie wrap - asparagus, snow peas, lettuce, tomato, carrot, and a light sauce served with fries (and it said guacamole, but really it was some creamy something that was not vegan). This was just okay, which is a shame since there were so many tasty veggies in it. I was disappointed.

We also tried the veggie burger (without coleslaw, aioli, or cheese). The burger was a root burger, which was quite crumbly, was a little sweet and pretty tasty. Not my favorite burger ever, but good and if we go to Kiruna again I would eat one again. Raymond really liked it, and the fries were tasty.

Overall - I really like the atmosphere in the Bishops Arms. It is cozy and a great place to have a drink and veggie burger. Stay away from the wrap though.

Thai Kitchen, Kiruna Sweden

Location: VÄNORTSGATAN 8, 981 32 Kiruna, Sweden

Kiruna is a tiny town above the arctic circle in Sweden. I didn't have high hopes of finding things to eat here, but a wander through the downtown area revealed Thai Kitchen. Thai food if my favorite so I was pretty excited. We ordered the Pad Thai which was alright. Light flavors, a little sweet with lots of veggies. Raymond didn't like it much, I think because not all the veggies were fresh, but I thought it was good. I mean rice noodles = great in my book. And they were cooked perfectly so it was good. Not the best Thai food ever, but good considering where we were.

We also tried the noodles with black bean sauce, which I didn't like as much. This had more ginger and didn't taste of much else, but it was okay. Still lots of noodles and veggies and tofu that was not very good. I don't know how they made the tofu so not good, but the rest was okay.

Overall - Thai Kitchen is just okay Thai food, but in a tiny town of Kiruna I was happy to find it.

Chay Village, Berlin Germany

Location: Eisenacher Straße 40, 10781 Berlin, Germany

Chay Village is one of my favorite restaurants in Berlin. We usually get the same things ever time we eat there, but after last time we decided we need to try new things next time. We still started with the fresh rolls because they are just so tasty.

For mains we tried the Bo Chay Xao Can - soy meat and veggies in a tamarind sauce served with rice. We picked this one because it sounded very different from what we normally order. It was tasty, but not my favorite dish. I like tamarind, but I think it was a little too much for me in this dish. Raymond really enjoyed it.

We also tried the Pho Xao since we hadn't tried a noodle dish yet. This is noodles and veggies and tofu with a peanuty sauce and was quite good. This might end up being my go to dish when I don't want Pho soup. So tasty, but then again I love rice noodles! Definitely recommended.

Overall - I love Chay Village. Check it out if you want tasty Vietnamese food in Berlin.

It's been a while

Wow it has been almost 2 months since I have updated this page. I didn't mean for it to go so long, but life and things just got in the way. My how the time has passed. Anyway, next week updates will start again and hopefully no more long interruptions in the future.

Tanne B, Berlin Germany

Location: Eisenbahnstraße 48, 10997 Berlin, Germany

Tanne B is probably my favorite ice cream place in Berlin. They have fresh waffles that are vegan and with a scoop of ice cream they are delicious! Raymond opted for pistachio which he really enjoyed, but I am not a fan of pistachios. It was very creamy though.

It was a hot day so I opted for strawberry sorbet, which I didn't think would pair well with the waffle, but it was delicious. Light and refreshing.

Overall - Tanne B is delicious. Their vegan ice creams are some of the best around. Highly recommended.

Dolores, Berlin Germany

Location: Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße 7, 10178 Berlin, Germany

We walked by Dolores the other day around lunchtime so we stopped in to try their burritos. We tried both of the vegan options on the classic burritos menu. First up was the Vegan Friend - mild tomato salsa, Mexican super rice, black beans, fajita veggies, lettuce in a tortilla. This was very tasty. I love black beans, though they are harder to find here. The fajita veggies were very tasty and everything came together into a tasty burrito. They are also huge, so bring your appetite.

We also tried the Vegan Lover - smoky corn soy meat, guacamole, smoky peanut salsa, Mexican super rice, black beans, fajita veggies and lettuce in a tortilla. This was also quite tasty. I like the additions, though it is a little spicy (at the upper level of my spice tolerance. I don't like a lot of spice, but I am getting better). The guacamole did help cool after the spice. Really tasty and huge just like the other one. I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite as they were both very good.

Overall - I really enjoyed Dolores. They have two pre-combined options, or make your own with lots of vegan choices. The burritos are huge and a pretty good deal.

Eislabor, Berlin Germany

Location: Raumerstraße 31, 10437 Berlin, Germany

After eating at Vego recently we headed down to Eislabor to try their vegan ice creams again. The flavors we tried that day were chocolate and Almond. These were alright, but kind of icey. Like the texture had ice crystals in it, so not the best, but tasty and good while sitting in the park on a warm summer evening. If other vegan ice cream places were closer we would have gone to them, but this will do in a pinch.

Overall - Not the best ice cream, but not terrible either. The texture is just not as smooth as it should be.

Vego Foodworld, Berlin Germany

Location: Lychener Straße 63, 10437 Berlin, Germany

Vego Foodworld is one of our regular hang outs. We stop by fairly often for burgers since they are close to where we live and quite tasty. On this trip we tried the Gemuse Pommes (vegetable fries) as I had seen someone order them on the previous visit. These were fries, zucchini, eggplant, and carrot and were super tasty. The vegetables were delicious and I think I will be ordering this from now on instead of just fries.

Raymond ordered the Nordsjoen Cheese Burger - fish burger with cheese and tartar. I really have never liked any seafood or tartar sauce so I didn't try it, but he really likes it. Says it tastes fishy.

I ordered the Bacon Cheese Burger - lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, cheese, sauce, bacon. So tasty. One of my favorites for sure.

Overall - Vego is delicious. I love their burgers and we stop by often. Highly recommended.

Avalon, Gent Belgium

Location: Geldmunt 32, 9000 Gent, Belgium

I was very excited to try Avalon in Gent. I love places that have plates of little bits of lots of things. I getting bites of so many different things! We tried two different plates, the first the Veggie Pie plate. On the place (clockwise from the botton left) beet salad with nuts and sprouts - all raw. This was tasty as I love beets. The veggie pie was tasty, tofu and veggie filling, though the crust was really dry and hard to eat. Then behind that at the top of the plate was this bean paste with tempeh which was really tasty. The tempeh was seasoned well and was just delicious. Then on the right there is some cauliflower with peanut sauce which was amazing! Very creamy sauce and just delicious. I combined the sauce with everything else as it was so tasty. Then some roasted zucchini which was spiced very well and super good. Then the more liquid stuff was rhubarb which was so tasty! It was very tart, with lots of cinnamon and sugar and was so delicious.

We also tried the tempeh reuben (at the tip of the plate). I know it doesn't look like a sandwich, and it wasn't like a normal sandwich. It was small sliced of break with sauce and sauerkraut and tempeh layered between them. So like small reuben bites and it was quite tasty, though a little mustardy. Then the same accompaniments came with this as with the veggie pie, a few of which were hidden in the above photo. This one has some pickled vegetables (near the middle) and underneath them was some braised spinach which was so good and buttery. Really everything was so good and I loved it.

We were so full after eating our plates of food, but they had a chocolate pudding which we ordered to go so we could try it later. This had a strong coconut and banana flavor and was not what I was expecting (it was pretty dense and not pudding like) but tasty.

Overall - I loved Avalon. Everything was very tasty and so good. I would definitely stop by again when we are in the area as it was delicious. Definitely go, but you might need to make reservations as it can get busy.

De Frietketel, Gent Belgium

Location: Papegaaistraat, 9000 Gent, Belgium

I couldn't find much info about De Freitketel in Gent, but I did find some photos of foods they had so we decided to check it out. This was the last place we ate before catching the train out of Gent, and it was pretty cheap and a ton of food.

They have a sign saying that the veggie things can be made vegan by using a different bread and sauce than they usually use, so you just have to ask. It was crazy busy when we got there, but our food still came out pretty fast. We started with the crispy hawaiian burger - pineapple, lettuce, onion, sauce. This patty had a meaty flavor, kind of like Boca burgers but much better. The flavors were very nice and it was a really good burger.

We also tried the Groenburger (green burger)- tartar, tomato, onion, lettuce. This patty was a veggie patty with corn, peas, carrots, and potato and was delicious! One of my favorite burgers we have had. Very tasty with lots of veggies.

We also tried the Veggie Bitterballen. We didn't know what we were going to get with this, bit they were like corn and other veggie fritters. Very tasty.

And finally the fries. They were good, and you got a ton of them! I will say overall I was disappointed with the fries in Belgium. They don't season them at all, at least at the places we had fries, and I like a little salt on my fries. They also don't come with any sauces, no ketchup or anything, you have to buy that extra. Not a big deal, but it is different from most places we have been. I mean the fries were alright, but I have had better elsewhere. And that was all over Belgium we just had so so fries.

Overall- De Frietketel was really tasty, very cheap, and a ton of food. If I lived here we would go often. Definitely check it out if you are in Gent.

Thai Rainbow, Brussels, Belgium

Location: Place Sainte-Catherine 15, 1000 Brussels, Belgium

We had a few hours in Brussels on a recent vacation so we stopped at Thai Rainbow for some lunch. We started with some spring rolls. These were very black pepper-ey and were delicious.

I had the Vegetarian Noodle Soup - rice noodles with tofu and veggies. This was just alright. A bit too salty for my tastes and just so so.

Raymond had the Pad Thai with tofu. This was more peanut than tamarind flavor, but tasty. Not the best ever, but good. The tofu also had a tamarind sauce on it which was quite good.

Overall - This place was alright, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

Greenway Foods, Gent Belgium

Location: Nederkouter 42, 9000 Gent, Belgium

I had high hopes for Greenway Foods. I had read a lot of great reviews, especially about their brownies so I was hoping for a great lunch. We started with the spinach burger, which was just alright. It just tasted like spinach, and the bread overpowered everything else.

We also tried the Veggie Bolognese. This was tasty and a ton of food (even though we ordered the smaller portion). I wouldn't really get it again though as I feel like I could easily make it myself.

We also tried the root cake which I did enjoy. This was probably my favorite of everything we got here. It was moist with a great flavor.

Overall - I was not that impressed with Greenway Foods. I wouldn't make a special trip there, but if walking by I would probably stop for a treat.
