Vegan Folie's, Paris France

Location: 53 Rue Mouffetard, 75005 Paris, France

On our recent trip to Paris I was very excited to go to Vegan Folie's. I mean it is a vegan bakery so I couldn't wait.

The first thing we tried was a Austin Flower - apricot lavender. This was...I could hardly eat it. It was so overly floral it was overpowering and was hard to swallow. The cake itself was also overcooked and very browned and dry, and you could not taste any apricot flavor as the lavender just overpowers everything.

Next up was the Choc Norris - chocolate chocolate. The frosting nice - chocolatey and light. The cake however was also really dry and not very good. Very disappointing.

Last of the sweets we tried was a cookie sandwich. This was by far the best, but the cupcakes were not good so it was not a hard feat. This however was really tasty. The chocolate chip cookies were delicious, the frosting between not too sweet and complimented the cookies well. I would get these again.

They also served savory cupcakes so we had to try one of them. We went with the L'Indien - curry garam masala. The frosting was curry flavor, the cake had peas and such in it and...it was very strange, but the flavors were good. It took a while to get past the savory cupcake idea while eating it, but it was tasty (though the cake was still dry). I would try another one.

Overall - The cakes were way too dry and overcooked. The cookie sandwich was delicious, and I did like the savory cupcakes, I just wish they wouldn't have been overcooked. If I was in the area and walked by I might get a savory cupcake or the cookies, but I wouldn't make a special trip to go by here.

Funk You, Berlin Germany

Location: Gärtnerstraße 21, 13055 Berlin, Germany

Funk You had a stand at the market in Friedrichshain a sign for vegan cake! We had to try one of them - they had raspberry chocolate, but since we just had raspberry sorbet and Raymond doesn't like fruit and chocolate we went for the other options - chocolate nut. This was pretty tasty though the cake was a smidgen dry. There were nuts throughout as well as on top with a thick chocolate frosting that was delicious - not too sweet. They also have a storefront not too far away that we will have to stop in and see if they have other great vegan treats.

Overall - This cake was a nice treat and we need to go to the storefront to see what else they have for me to eat.

Veganz, Berlin Germany

Location: Schivelbeiner Straße 34, 10439 Berlin, Germany

I have a hard time finding a good breakfast in Berlin besides something simple from the bakery. We went to Veganz before for brunch, but they also have some breakfast foods in their bakery as well as baked goods from Goodies. Raymond had been before and said they had tasty bagel sandwiches so went to check it out one morning.

We started with a croissant. This was just alright. An issue I have with a lot of croissants is the vegan margarine or whatever they use leaves a film in my mouth after I have eaten it which I really dislike. I have never had this issue with ones I make at home so I am not sure why I often find this is true for bakeries. This was also a little dense and not as light and flaky as I would have liked.

We also tired a cranberry orange scone. Scones are one of those things that they can be amazing or they can just be really dry and hard to eat. This fortunately was amazing! I can be kind of iffy on orange flavored bready stuff, but this wasn't overly orange so it was good. It was nice and moist and crumbly and delicious.

We then tried two bagel sandwiches. The first was a BBQ tofu bagel - a bagel with bbq tofu, cheese, lettuce and I'm not sure what else, but it was super tasty. The bbq sauce was super tasty and all the other toppings made for a really yummy bagel.

We also tried a hummus bagel with cucumbers, sprouts, tomato, lettuce and avocado. This was light and refreshing and so tasty. I think I liked this one better than the bbq as it just felt healthier. Super super tasty. I will have to go back and try some of the other bagel sandwiches and desserts.

Overall - You should stop in at Veganz for some tasty bagel sandwiches (and also any vegan groceries you might want).

Edible Flours, Vancouver BC

Location: 2280 W Broadway, Vancouver, BC V6K 2E4, Canada
From Vegan Gastrobot
I was very excited for Edible Flours – they have cupcakes with filling and different flavors and more than your average vegan cupcake which is exciting for me. When we walked in the cupcakes looked amazing! We tried the Cookie Crumble cupcake – this was so good! The vanilla cake was very moist, the frosting however was almost too sweet, though very light and whipped. The cookie pieces were delicious!

From Vegan Gastrobot
We also tried a stuffed chocolate caramel cupcake. I think I liked this one slightly more than the last. It was filled with caramel and had caramels on top as well. The chocolate cake itself was also very moist and amazing! The frosting was the same as the other one – almost too sweet, but light and fluffy.

From Vegan Gastrobot
Finally we had a brownie cookie sandwich – this was amazing!! Like really amazing. The frosting inside I did not like – way too sweet for me (I don’t really like frosting in general – it has to be REALLY good like Red Velvet in Washington, DC for me to love it). The brownie however – unbelievable! Probably my favorite vegan brownie…well it is close to the brownie from Rise Above in St Catherin’s Canada.

Overall – If you want sweet then stop by Edible Flours in Vancouver BC. The cupcakes are fun flavors, the brownies are incredible…everything is delicious!

Karmavore The Vegan Shop, New Westminster BC

Location: 610 Columbia St, New Westminster, BC V3M 1A8, Canada
From Vegan Gastrobot
Karmavore was a little bit out of the way in New Westminster, but it sounded amazing so we tried to fit it in. The only time we had was Sun morning so we had a very tasty sweet breakfast. First up was an ice cream sundae! They were out of chocolate, we had ordered the swirl, and so they gave us the vanilla with chocolate sauce for free. This was amazing! I love soft serve and wish we had this in Seattle. It was creamy and tasted just like normal soft serve to me.

From Vegan Gastrobot
Next was a plain croissant and a daiya croissant. The plain croissant was Raymond’s favorite, but it was missing something to me….I couldn’t quite figure out what was missing. It was flaky and light, and good, but something was off for me. The Daiya croissant was much better – still flaky and the cheese gave it a nice flavor. They were both flaky like croissants should be, but a little denser maybe? I don’t know. I did like the cheese one a lot.

From Vegan Gastrobot
Finally we had a cinnamon bun. This was so disappointing…it needed way more cinnamon. It didn’t really have much flavor which is surprising. I definitely would not get it again; it was dry and just not good.

Overall – I really liked the store/bakery set up. The soft serve was amazing so definitely get that! Also, the croissants were not bad. They also have cupcakes from Edible Flours which are amazing so they have lots of treats. Plus some shoes and other apparel and grocery items. Definitely worth a stop if you can manage it.

Sweet Cherubim, Vancouver BC

Location: 1105 Commercial Dr, Vancouver, BC V5L 2N1, Canada
From Vegan Gastrobot
I had wanted to check out the co-op and found a ton of organic and vegan places in the same area. I had looked up Sweet Cherubim, but decided against putting it on the list as we had already had too many places to go to and nothing shouted out to me as have to try. We wandered into the store though and then the restaurant just to spy since we were there and found a case full of vegan treats. They all looked amazing! We tried the Chocolate carrot cake cupcake which looked really good (and was a different flavor than plain chocolate or vanilla). This was…just not very good. I tried to eat it, but immediately spit out my first bite it was that bad. I couldn’t do it.

From Vegan Gastrobot
We also tried an oatmeal raisin cookie which I could eat, but it really wasn’t that good. It looked amazing, but I don’t know why it didn’t taste fantastic…we threw out most of it.

From Vegan Gastrobot
And last but not least we tried a chocolate shortbread bliss cookie. This was the only thing that I enjoyed that we ordered. It was like a shortbread cookie with some chocolate inside. Really crunchy and good.

Overall – I would not go to Sweet Cherubim. Most of the baked goods were disgusting, the lady was not at all happy or pleasant to us (we asked for the goods to go as we wanted to sit outside since it was sunny, and she just threw them in a bag with the cupcake upside down so the frosting was all smashed on one side and it was just very unnecessary). There are much better places to get food in Vancouver.

Fairy Cakes Cupcakes, Vancouver BC

Location: 3586 Fraser St, Vancouver, BC V5V 4C4, Canada
From Vegan Gastrobot
All vegan cupcake bakery? Yes please! We had to try out Fairy Cakes Cupcakes while we were in Vancouver. We tried the blueberry chocolate cupcake which was…not that good. The cake was dry, the frosting did not taste like blueberry….it just wasn’t good. We also had a chocolate chip cookie which was…alright but nothing special. I make better chocolate chip cookies at home.

From Vegan Gastrobot
And we tried a key lime cupcake as I love lime. This was citrusy, but the frosting was almost too sweet and the cake was way too oily. It was just not good. I was sooo disappointed as I would not go back here for baked goods. They just were not that good.

Overall – I would not recommend going here. The cupcakes were not very good, the cookie was just alright. I love supporting vegan places, but unfortunately this would not be a place I would stop by again, even if I were in the neighborhood and wanted a treat. The treats were just not good which makes me very sad.
