Radost FX, Prague Czech Republic

Location: Bělehradská 234/120, 120 00 Prague-Prague 2, Czech Republic

When researching places to eat in Prague I found Radost FX had brunch options for vegans on the weekends so we decided to check it out. We tried the mixed tofu - tofu with thai sesame sauce, salad, served with potatoes & toast. The tofu was tasty by itself and the sauce was tasty - nutty and a little spicy. The salad had a sweet vinaigrette which was unbelievably good. What is with Prague having all the good salad dressings? Seriously they are some of the best I have ever had. The potatoes were cooked and seasoned well. Maybe heavy on the paprika (they looked like they would have a tomato flavor but they didn't) and other spices I couldn't place. They had an odd flavor, but in a good way. I'm just not sure what spices were used as the flavors were not ones I am familiar with.

We also tried the huevos-less rancheros - Corn tortilla with beans, scrambled tofu, topped with salsa & guacamole served with potatoes and toast. This was incredibly tasty. It is hard to find Mexican good in Berlin - not much salad and beans and guacamole to be had so I was excited for this. The guacamole and salsa were spicy and delicious and it was just really really good. I keep thinking back on this dish and wishing I could get it here (or even find the ingredients to make it easily).

Overall - I would highly recommend Radost FX. The brunch options were amazing and I wish we would have had time to go back again and try their other food choices. Next time. Definitely stop in if you are in Prague.

Oh la la Tartes Shop, Berlin Germany - Brunch

Location: Mainzer Straße 18, 12053 Berlin, Germany

We walked by Oh la la Tartes Shop one day and saw they have a vegan brunch on Saturdays. I was really excited as when we asked about it they said there would be baked goods like croissants, some hot food items, crepes, etc. It sounded wonderful. We made a reservation and showed up....to a fairly disappointing brunch. I looked at their facebook page and the photos have lots of baked good and yummy looking things. We had the above - some crepes with jams to put in them - they were super sweet and tasty, but I couldn't eat a ton of them as they were so sweet. In the small round container was a mint cucumber cold soup which was alright. Above that was some zucchini pasta which was...not the best I have had. Some salad and a little dessert with raspberry and this delicious marshmallow creamy stuff on top.

Later they also added some tofu and spinach dish (at the top of the plate) which was not very flavorful. There was a chocolate mini cupcake that was super dry and not very good, some tofu next to that and pineapple, and some chocolate mousse which was amazing. They did have some rice cakes, but no other baked good like I had been hoping. Really I was really disappointed in the brunch - I left still hungry, but I couldn't eat any more crepes.

Overall - I really would like to go back and try the brunch again. I was expecting baked goods and yummy treats, but the brunch we had was....there wasn't much except sugar. I would also like to go back and try their vegan quiche someday.

Brunch at Veganz, Berlin Germany

Location: Schivelbeiner Straße 34, 10439 Berlin, Germany

My first day in Berlin was a Sunday so Raymond took me out to brunch at Veganz. Apparently Berlin is big on Brunch and there are a lot of vegan brunch buffets. I should have gotten a photo of the entire table, but I blame the jetlag. Here is my plate of deliciousness. There is a quiche thing, some tofu scramble with seitan, some roasted veggies, some cucumber salad, some beet salad, some rice, some beet and tempeh scramble and a few other salads. I really liked all of the beet dishes and the tofu scramble was pretty tasty. The roasted veggies were amazing. Really I liked most of it but the one salad that was peppermint flavored (yuck!). There were also lots of breads and bagels and such and cereals with soy, rice and oat milk. This was a great idea for my first day as I was so hungry! I could eat as much as I wanted.

There was also this dessert thing - like a chocolate pudding with raspberry gel stuff and bananas on top. It was really tasty and not very sweet which was perfect as I don't like super sweet in the morning. I'm not 100% sure what it was made out of, but since it was all vegan I didn't worry about it as it was tasty.

Overall - I enjoyed brunch at Veganz and I will have to go again sometime. After I check out the other brunch options around town :)

St Dames, Seattle WA

Location: 4525 Martin Luther King Jr Way S, Seattle, WA 98108, USA

St Dames is...well it is hit or miss. It is not super expensive, but it is not cheap either. We have gone a few times for special occasions where we didn't want to spend a fortune (like at Cafe Flora or Sutra), and I really want to like it but it is not my favorite restaurant in Seattle. Sometimes we get something that is absolutely amazing and somethings we get are just alright at best. It is unfortunate as if they could make everything amazing I would frequent it more often. While my mom was in town visiting we went out for brunch at St Dames to try it out. The soup of the day was vegan cream of broccoli and potato so I had to try it as it sounded amazing. It was alright. Not bad, but not incredibly good either. I think I could have made one with better and more flavor.

We also got the tofu scramble of the day which was Mexican themed with tofu, vegan chorizo, black beans, and corn topped with vegan sour cream and served with 2 corn tortillas and potatoes. This I liked even though it was a little spicy. The scramble was seasoned well and it went well with the tortillas. The potatoes were cooked nicely and had a good seasoning to them as well.

And finally we tried the vegan biscuits and gravy - mushroom and vegan chorizo gravy served with tamari braised kale. This was...not very good. I think part of the problem was I had the bottom half of the biscuit and it was burned. Not browned a little, burned completely black. So it tasted like charcoal and was just not good. The gravy itself was alright, but not my favorite. I thought it would have a lot of flavor especially with the chorizo in there, but it was just blah. The kale was good but a little salty. Overall this dish was just not good and I would not order it again (even though I love biscuits and gravy for breakfast).

Overall - St Dames is an iffy one. If you are in the area and feel like a drink maybe stop by. Their dishes are hit or miss - some are amazing and some are just not good. If they could work it out so everything had a great flavor I would go more often, but as it stands I can't really recommend them.

The Wallflower, Vancouver BC

Location: 2420 Main St, Vancouver, BC V5T 3E2, Canada
From Vegan Gastrobot
The Wallflower was top on my list of places to try in Vancouver. It sounded like divey dinner food with lots of vegan options. We were there on a Sat around 11 and it was packed! We had to wait a while for a table, but that was fine since we were still kind of full from breakfast. I loved the atmosphere – this is another place that I would return to again and again (maybe for one of the shows they have in the evenings? Or just a few drinks and some vegan poutine). They had many vegan options clearly marked on the menu. We tried the Vegan Mac & Cheesey – this was incredible! Probably my favorite mac and cheese I have had. Not very oily, I don’t think they used a commercial mock cheese, super creamy and just yum! It was so creamy and cheesey that it reminded me of “real” mac and cheese. Highly recommended.

From Vegan Gastrobot

We also got the vegan breakfast poutine – veggie dogs, marinated tofu, daiya mozzarella, hashbrowns and gravy. This was also incredible!  There were big pieces of potato, the hot dogs tasted very much like real ones (or what I remember real ones tasting like) I think the gravy was a miso gravy and was amazing, there was not too much of the daiya cheese, and the crumbled tofu really pulled it all together. I would definitely get this again! Much better than the poutine we had in Toronto. So tasty and we were so full, but we ate every last bite.

From Vegan Gastrobot
The menu also lists vegan crème brulee which I had to try – I have never had a vegan version. While it did not have the caramelized sugar on the top to crack, I loved it! It was super light and creamy (I think it was a coconut milk base, but didn’t have a strong coconut flavor) with a super sweet sauce on top and was just amazing. The perfect end to a perfect meal.

Overall – I would highly recommend stopping by The Wallflower if you are in Vancouver. It was definitely one of my favorite places to eat in the city.

Founding Farmers, Washinton DC

Location: 1924 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20431, USA
From Vegan Gastrobot
I remember seeing that Founding Farmers
had a vegan menu that looked tasty so we stopped by for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Not much was open in the area and it was packed. Luckily it was nice outside and I just wanted to sit and visit with a friend so we decided to sit outside and wait for a table. I am so glad we did! The food was amazing. First up we had the vegan patty melt – a gardein burger patty, caramelized onions, vegan cheddar, and homemade agave mustard on toasted rye bread. We chose asparagus as the side as well…asparagus is tasty! The sandwich was incredible! We had a patty melt the weekend prior at a place in Seattle and it was nowhere near as good as this one.  The bread was delicious and toasted perfect, the onions and mustard lent a nice flavor, the cheese was not overpowering, the burger was juicy and delicious. The asparagus was also amazing - sweet and tender and still crisp. It was cooked with a little olive oil with salt & pepper seasoning it and it was really really great.

We also tried the Chocolate Stout Farmhouse Waffle – cocoa waffle made with Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout topped with fresh banana slices and homemade vegan caramel sauce. The waffle by itself was not very sweet which was good. It paired nicely with the banana and the caramel sauce so they were not overpowering either – they all worked well together. The banana and caramel added the sweetness (the caramel by itself was incredibly sweet, but there wasn’t much of it so you just got a little bit sweet), the waffle mellowed it out…it was amazing.
Overall – Even if there is an hour and a half wait I would eat here again. The food seemed simple, but they did an amazing job of making the simple items better than any I have had before, like the side of asparagus. My non-vegan friend who ate with us was complaining about how long we were waiting, but even he thought it was worth it. Definitely go here if you can.

Sticky Fingers Bakery, Washington DC, Brunch

Location: 1370 Park Rd NW, Washington, DC 20010, USA
From Vegan Gastrobot
While picking up treats from Sticky Fingers Bakery we saw that they have brunch on the weekend including biscuits and gravy which is one of my favorites. There are a few food items that if a restaurant has it I like to try it and this is one of them. I never had non-vegan biscuits and gravy so I am not 100% sure what it should taste like, but I know what I like in the breakfast food. You can get the biscuits and gravy by itself or as a platter with cheesy grits and tofu scramble. We decided to go with the platter to try a little bit of everything. The cheesy grits were…not my thing. They did not have any flavor and I don’t know that I have ever had grits before. Maybe if you like grits you would like them. The tofu scramble was alright. It had a very light flavor and was not bad. The biscuits and gravy were delicious! The biscuits were light and fluffy, the gravy was very meaty and like a dinner gravy, but it was good.

From Vegan Gastrobot
We also picked up a Mini Berry Pie to eat later. We heated it up and it was really tasty. The crust was flaky and delicious, the filling quite good.

Overall – Sticky Finger I found to be hit and miss. The biscuits and gravy were delicious, the mac and cheese amazing, the pie and cookies good everything else we tried was just not so good. I am still so disappointed that they only have chocolate and vanilla cake bases….and that the cakes were very dry. Would it hurt to add a little flavor and make it fun?

Sputnik, Denver CO, second visit

Location: Denver, CO, USA
From Vegan Gastrobot
On our last day in Denver we decided to go back to Sputnik for lunch. I had spied on the brunch menu when we went the first time (but not until after we had ordered and eaten) and saw a few things that sounded interesting so we had to go back. We got a potato chorizo taco plate - scrambled tofu, vegan chorizo, and potatoes served in soft tacos with pico de gaio and pinto beans. These were really simple so I was surprised by how amazing they were! It seemed like they would be good, but they were incredible!

From Vegan Gastrobot
We also ordered the stacks of vegan power. I know the photo looks like it is a mess, and it was kind of, but this was the item I had seen on the menu that I had wanted to go back and try. These were quinoa cakes topped with vegan breakfast sausage, steamed greens, creamy roasted garlic sauce and avocado and they were absolutely amazing! The quinoa cakes kind of fell apart, but they were flavored perfectly and coupled with the sausage, garlic sauce and greens it was an unbelievable combination. A lot of times I order things at restaurants where most of the ingredients sound good, but one thing I am iffy on and I hope that the combination is not bad - on this it was the garlic sauce as I am not the biggest garlic fan and it can easily overpower everything else. In this instance it worked perfectly to help pull everything together.

Overall - definitely check out Sputnik if you are in Denver. Their food is amazing.

Georgetown Liquor Company, Seattle WA, Brunch

Location: Seattle, WA, USA
From Vegan Gastrobot
We go to Georgetown Liquor Company dinner at often, but when looking for happy hour options there I saw they had a brunch menu. Last weekend we decided to try it out. Hogtown Breakfast Sandwich - house made vegan sunny side up egg with vegan mozzarella, Happy 'ham' on a toasted English muffin. Served with fresh herb roasted potatoes and fruit and a side of 'bacon.' The bacon was good - just some of the ham fried up with some seasonings - it almost reminded me of jerky. The potatoes were a let down - they didn't have any seasoning and were just blah. Really you should be able to make some potatoes and I should be happy with them - they are not that hard to make and it was very disappointing that they couldn't get something so simple right.

From Vegan Gastrobot
The sandwich was tasty and they made the vegan egg look like an egg! The parts didn't taste any different, but I liked the visual. While the sandwich was good, it wasn't the best breakfast sandwich I have had.

From Vegan Gastrobot
We also ordered the biscuits and gravy with sausage - these also came with the potatoes and fruit. This was my favorite of the two - the biscuits was delicious, the gravy I really likes and no mushrooms to pick out. The gravy was supposed to be like country gravy, and Raymond didn't like it that much. He felt it was more like gravy for mashed potatoes, but then again he loves Wayward's gravy. If I found myself here again for brunch this is definitely what I would order. The only issue I had with this is it wasn't as much food as I am used to for breakfast on the weekends. During the week I just have a smoothie, but on Saturdays I like my big breakfast. After sharing this meal with Raymond I left and was still a little hungry.

Overall - I really enjoy Georgetown Liquor Company for happy hour or dinner, but for brunch I would rather go to Wayward.

Sacred Chow, New York City

Location: 227 Sullivan St, New York, NY 10012, USA
From Food
Day two of our food tour of New York started with brunch at Sacred Chow. I love breakfast, it is one of my favorite meals though I hate making it. Sacred Chow was a little expensive for breakfast (over $10 a plate), but it was quite tasty. We walked in and I loved the place - very open and bright with lots of natural light. We tried the breakfast sandwich with a side of gravy so we could try out a little bit of everything. The breakfast sandwich was a soy buttermilk biscuit filled with tofu scramble and tempeh strips with a side of fruit to share. This was huge - I am glad we only ordered the one entree. There is no way you could eat this as a sandwich - it would be way too sloppy and the tofu spilled out all over the plate so fork and knife it is. We took the top half of the biscuit and put the gravy on that for a biscuit and gravy. The gravy was pretty good - peppery and thick like a normal white gravy served on biscuits. I haven't come across a lot of vegan gravies like this - the place we usually go has amazing mushroom gravy, which isn't the same so it was nice to have something different. The tofu was good, but nothing special. The biscuits light and fluffy. They were very generous with the fruit on the side.

From Food
We also tried one of the specials - cornmeal crusted brussel sprouts. I definitely need to recreate these. Overall very good if a little pricey.
