Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant, Salzburg Austria

Location: Bayerhamerstraße 13, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

Our first night in Salzburg we decided to try Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant. We started with the vegetable samosas - peas, potatoes, seeds served with three dips - a creamy one that is not vegan, a mango one that I am allergic to so I didn't try it, and a tamarind sauce which was delicious. The samosas was spiced well, though different from any that I had had before. Super tasty.

Next we tried the Sabzee Jhaldrezi - zucchini, peppers, onion, and tomatoes with North Indian spices. This was spiced well and a little hot, the vegetables were cooked well and it was a giant plate of food. Very good.

And finally we tried the chana masala - chickpeas with tomatoes and curry sauce. This was also giant plate of food. It was spiced well and a little cinnamony and just really really good. So much food, but so good.

Overall - I really enjoyed Taj Mahal. The servings were huge, the spices were not the usual flavors, but very tasty. I definitely would go back again.

Chutney's Queen Anne, Seattle WA

Location: 519 1st Ave N, Seattle, WA 98109, USA

We were headed to the ballet at McCaw Hall so we decided to stop by Chutney's Queen Anne for dinner before the show. We usually end up going to Bamboo Garden which is always good, but we decided to switch it up. We arrive and there was no one else in the restaurant (which is odd as it was Friday evening and the other places we were passing on the way were packed). Odd but hopefully the food will be good. The first issue we had was that some of the items listed on the vegan menu were not in fact vegan. Luckily the waitstaff told us this, but really why is it listed on that menu then? We probably should have taken the hint and went somewhere else at this point, but we didn't. We started with some pakoras which were the best part of the meal. Not the best I have ever had, but good.

We then tried the Chana Saag which was...tasteless. It really had no flavor which is odd. Spinach dishes are my favorite at Indian places and this was just....mush that was not good. I was incredibly disappointed.

We also tried the vegetable vindaloo which did have some flavor, just not the right kind. It tasted like spaghetti sauce with vegetables in it which was just kind of odd. Maybe if it was served over pasta I would have enjoyed it, but as an Indian dish it was not good.

Overall - I would not recommend Chutney's Queen Anne. The food was not good, didn't have much flavor or the wrong flavor and it was just not a place I would go back to.

Planet Veg, Vancouver BC, Canada

Location: 1941 Cornwall Ave, Vancouver, BC V6J 1C8, Canada
From Vegan Gastrobot
I had put Planet Veg on my list of places to eat at in Vancouver because they had roti rolls. I was hoping they were going to be like the One Love Vegetarian in Toronto. We walked in and I thought oh I don’t know about this place…it just seemed like it wouldn’t be amazing food. When the food came out I again though oh…maybe we should have skipped this. It looks like just a burrito and an eh one at that. This is not going to be amazing like I had hoped. Boy was I wrong! It didn’t look like much but our roti roll was unbelievable! We ordered the Kathmandu roll which was a 12” spinach roti filled with cabbage, mixed vegetables cooked in spices, tomatoes, cucumber and crispy noodles with a jalapeno cilantro chutney.

From Vegan Gastrobot
I was iffy on the noodles – like it didn’t make sense in my head how that would be really good. The mixed veggies were just like the back of frozen carrots, corn, green beans, etc but they were spiced wonderfully! The combination of everything was just incredible – The noodles added a nice crunch, the sauce was delicious and not spicy, it all felt very light and healthy and perfect on a warm summery day. I was wishing we would have gotten more for the road. If I worked in the area I would stop by here for lunch all the time! We also tried the baked curry samosa. This was just alright – it did not have much flavor which surprised me since the roti roll was so flavorful.

Overall – Definitely stop in at Planet Veg. It is fast, cheap and incredibly good. Definitely try a roti roll!

Udupi Palace, Toronto ON, Canada

Location: Toronto, ON, Canada
From Vegan Gastrobot
Normally when traveling we do not eat at Indian or Thai restaurants as we can get both in Seattle that is amazing. However when looking at places to eat in Toronto I came across Udupi Palace and their menu contained Indian foods I have never seen on the menus here so we had to check it out. The people we were staying with said it was just okay, so we weren't expecting a lot. We ordered a Combo Masala Uthopam with Iddly (steamed rice and lentil patty - bottom left) and Medhu Vada (fried lentil donut - top left). This was just alright. It wasn't amazing, but it wasn't horrible either. I expected it to be tastier as masala is usually delicious. I had never had the Iddly or Medhu Vada but they were both just so so. I wouldn't go out of my way for them again.

We also ordered Coimbator Dosa - like a crepe with mixed vegetables inside. This was a lot better, but still just so so. If I were to go here again this is what I would get, or try something else.

Overall - if you are in Toronto and are looking for a place to eat you can find much better options elsewhere. Udupi Palace was not bad, it just wasn't really good either. The people working there were also not very friendly so overall I wouldn't go back.
